Flambée des prix: the Collective of the Left calls for mobilization against the dear life

Le Collectif Noo Lank denounces the deterioration of the living conditions of Senegalese households and calls on citizens to mobilize. In a communiqué dated 23 September, the national executive secretariat of the collective denounced the flaming rise in the prices of basic necessities, rent and electricity, increases which “reach intolerable levels” in the face of stagnant incomes. The collective severely criticises several government decisions, notably the introduction of a tax on monetary transfers, which it considers as a direct attack on family solidarity. Noo Lank also interprets the announcement of a “Diaspora Bond” by the Premier Ministre à Milan as an “aveu d’échec”, illustrating the incapacity of the government to mobilize its internal resources and to fight against waste and corruption. The communiqué highlighted the contrast between the growing precariousness of citizens and the state’s train of life, stressing that “the political funds have remained unchanged, or even increased” for certain institutions, while the “indecent” advantages of a minority of public officials are maintained. The collective insists on the structural dysfunctions of the market. For sugar, he notes that imports are necessary to stabilize prices, while for onions and other vegetables, the difficulty lies not in production but in conservation. No Lank calls for major reforms to put an end to monopolies, support farmers, invest in conservation infrastructure and reorient taxation to the benefit of households. Faithful to its commitment, the collective urges citizens to protest against these policies, for “dignity, social justice and the effective reduction of the cost of living”.
