Johannesburg – Reports that Ekurhuleni Roads and Transport Management MMC Andile Mngwevu is missing after his car was reportedly swept away by severe floodwaters in Mozambique have not been verified.

Reacting to the online reports, the City of Ekurhuleni on Saturday, 17 January 2026, said it “notes with concern reports alleging that the Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Roads and Transport Management, Cllr Andile Mngwevu, is missing following a vehicle being swept away by severe floodwaters in Mozambique”.

The City of Ekurhuleni added: “At this stage, these reports remain unverified.

The City of Ekurhuleni said, through the Office of the Executive Mayor, it was actively engaging the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the Office of the Gauteng Premier to establish the facts with Mozambican authorities through official diplomatic channels.

“We urge members of the public and the media to exercise restraint and avoid speculation while verification processes are underway,” said a terse statement released late at night by the City of Ekurhuleni.

“The safety and well-being of all affected persons are our primary concern.

“The City will provide official updates as soon as verified information becomes available.”
