Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, says Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has addressed one of the major challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Keyamo made the remark on Friday in Rivers State during the flag-off of the 7km Ipo Town–Airport Bypass and the commissioning of the Ikwerre Road–Igwuruta–Airport Road Corridor reconstructed by the Rivers State Government.
He noted that the road leading to the Port Harcourt International Airport had been in a deplorable state for years, adding that the Ministry of Aviation had long planned to rehabilitate it before the state government intervened.
According to the minister, “The road leading to the Port Harcourt Airport was to branch off the highway.
“That road had been in a deplorable condition, an we had always wanted to give that road a facelift, so that, those who arrive Port Harcourt, which is one of our international airports, which is one of our oldest international airports, they will have a god view of the city or a good impression when they are driving into the city.”
Keyamo apologized to members of the host community to the airport for any perceived neglect by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Ministry of Aviation.
He acknowledged that more still needed to be done for the community, noting that the ministry has taken note of all concerns and protests raised by residents.
He added that upon completion, the road project will open up the community to development and stimulate increased commercial activities in the area.
