Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, has ordered an immediate investigation into the fire outbreak at Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School in Birnin Kebbi.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, affected several hostels and classrooms within the school premises.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, the governor directed the constitution of a committee to determine the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
Idris was reportedly passing through the area when he noticed thick smoke and stopped to ascertain its source. On discovering that the smoke was coming from the school, emergency responders, including the Kebbi State Fire Service, were contacted to contain the blaze.
More than 140 students were evacuated from the premises during the operation. Authorities confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
Officials said the presence of gas cylinders in some of the students’ rooms contributed to the intensity of the fire, which firefighters battled for several hours before bringing it under control.
The affected students have since been relocated to the school’s main branch, while investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to commence immediately.
