Efforts are in progress to renovate various Stadia and sports facilities in Rivers State as part of the recent initiatives by the Rivers State Ministry of Sports to enhance sports development in the area. This was announced by the Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barr. Christopher Green listed the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Yakubu Gowon Stadium, and Alfred Diette Spiff Sports Complex (Civic Centre) among several facilities designated for the initiative. “The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium will experience significant renovations,” Barr. Green mentioned that the facility will soon host football matches approved by Africa’s and the global football governing bodies, CAF and FIFA. “The Yakubu Gowon Stadium will also receive significant renovations.” The Alfred Diette Spiff Civic Centre is set to undergo significant renovations. “The Basketball Stadium and other facilities in Rivers State will also receive major upgrades. We are dedicated, as a Ministry and Government, to offering top-notch facilities to enhance sports in the State for our community,” he stated. The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, constructed by the Rivers State Government in 2015, will experience such extensive renovations for the first time. Unlike many stadiums around the country, it features a hockey pitch, a shooting range, and 25 emergency exits, which supports its claim to be the most equipped stadium in Nigeria. The stadium was officially inaugurated on July 19, 2015, with a men’s football qualifier for the 2016 Olympics between Nigeria and Congo, where Nigeria’s U23 team triumphed 2-1. It accommodates nearly every sport, boasting an aquatic center with two Olympic-sized swimming and diving pools. Additionally, it includes two basketball courts, two tennis courts, two badminton courts, two handball courts, two indoor sports halls, as well as hostels and administrative facilities. Named after former national footballer Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka from Rivers State, this stadium has a seating capacity of 38,000, with all stands covered.
