Guinea-Bissau: João Bernardo Vieira withdraws from the PAIGC and enters the presidential race

BISSAU The political landscape of Guinea-Bissau is experiencing a major upheaval with the approach of simultaneous elections. João Bernardo Vieira has officially announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, a decision which is accompanied by his resignation from the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). The announcement was made on his official account of social network, where M. Vieira stated that his decision was the result of a “deep reflection” with his family, comrades and friends, guided by a “sense of patriotic conscience”. This declaration marked a significant turning point for the political man, who had forged a place within the PAIGC, a historically dominant party. In its publication, the candidate revealed to have addressed a letter to the PAIGC to officialise his position and his intention to run for the highest office of the country. The departure of one of the main political parties and its entry into the presidential race could potentially redistribute the cards and intensify the electoral competition.
