On 26 November 2025, Guinea-Bissau plunged into a major new political crisis when military officers declared that they had taken “total control” of the country, closing the borders and arresting the outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. Brigadier-General Denis N’Canha, head of the military bureau of the presidency, addressed the press at the headquarters of the armed forces to confirm the closure of the borders and the suspension of the electoral process. President Embaló was arrested around 13 hours in his office at the presidential palace, without violence according to his own statements transmitted to media such as Jeune Afrique.
