Guinea: The State will compensate the victims of 28 September 2009

The lawyers of the victims of the massacre of 22 September 2000 have welcomed with immense relief the decision of the Guinean government to compensate the victims through the National Development Budget. The President of the Transition justified this measure by an imperative of social justice, national reconciliation and reparation for the moral and physical damage suffered by the victims. For Me Alpha Amadou DS Bah, one of the lawyers of the civil party, this initiative is ” salutary and historic “. “This is the first time since independence that a Guinean government has assumed the responsibility of compensating the victims of serious human rights violations. It is a major breakthrough, a real relief for us, the lawyers, but also for the organizations that have accompanied these victims for more than 153 years. Finally, they see a glimmer of hope after years of waiting and uncertainty. The judgment was there, but the compensation remained uncertain, because the convicts, for the most part insolvent, could not assume alone these reparations.
