Gunmen abduct seven in night attack on Kano’s Gwarzo community

Suspected gunmen have attacked Zurum Mahauta, Gidan Malam Sallau community in Lakwaya village, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, abducting seven residents.

The attack occurred at about 12:00 midnight on Sunday, according to local sources.

A resident of the community who spoke to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity, said security operatives arrived shortly after the attack and pursued the assailants.

“The gunmen came around midnight and abducted seven people. Soldiers later arrived and chased after them,” the source said.

However, as of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation on whether the security forces intercepted the attackers, who reportedly escaped on motorcycles.

Residents disclosed that communities along the Katsina–Kano border had earlier raised an alarm after sighting suspected bandits moving towards Kano State hours before the attack.

According to sources, the suspected bandits, numbering about 20 and riding on motorcycles, were seen around Danjanku village in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, heading towards the Kano axis.

The warning was publicly raised by a Facebook user, Comrade Yarima BK, who shared the alert on his verified page, urging residents of Kano State, particularly those in Gwarzo and surrounding areas to be vigilant.

“People should be very vigilant. Bandits numbering about 20 on motorcycles were sighted today around Danjanku village in Malumfashi Local Government Area. They are suspected to be heading towards Kano,” the post read.

He also cautioned residents of Gwarzo and nearby communities, including Shanono, to take security precautions.

“Residents of Gwarzo and nearby communities should be extremely careful and take security precautions,” he warned.

Following the attack, Comrade Yarima BK lamented that the warning was not taken seriously by relevant authorities until after the incident occurred.

“We alerted the authorities and the public, but the warning was not given the necessary attention until after the attack,” he stated.

Residents further alleged that the gunmen crossed into Kano State from neighbouring Katsina State before carrying out the attack and later retreated through the same route.

The incident has renewed concerns over security lapses in border communities between Katsina and Kano states, where bandits frequently exploit porous boundaries to carry out attacks and kidnappings before retreating.
