His legacy speaks for itself – SDP pays tribute to late Nigerian senator, Akwashiki

Nigeria’s opposition party, Social Democratic Party, SDP, has paid tributes to the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who died on December 31, 2025, at an Indian hospital, aged 52.

The tribute was delivered on Thursday during an evening of remembrance organized by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, where Akwashiki was described as a rare symbol of integrity and selfless service.

Speaking at the event, SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, referred to the late senator as a “shining star,” saying his death represented a huge loss to his family, the party, and the nation at large.

Gombe noted that Akwashiki lived a life guided by honor, compassion, and the fear of God, earning widespread respect beyond political, ethnic, and religious divides. According to him, the late lawmaker’s leadership was rooted in service, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of his constituents.

The SDP chairman further revealed that shortly before his death, Akwashiki had expressed concerns about his declining health and its impact on his capacity to serve. He said the senator had even considered stepping aside to ensure effective representation for his people, a move Gombe described as a rare act of responsibility and patriotism.

“While we mourn his passing, we thank Almighty Allah for a life well lived. Leadership is not measured by the length of service or position held, but by the legacy left behind. Senator Akwashiki’s legacy speaks for itself,” Gombe said.

DAILY POST reports that Party leaders, traditional rulers, and other political stakeholders at the event also shared reflections on the late senator’s life, values, and contributions to the public.
