I went from being an Almajiri to becoming the CEO of NNPCL Group – Mele Kyari.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), shared his journey from being an Almajiri student to leading Africa’s largest energy company. In a statement on his official X account to mark his 60th birthday, Kyari, originally from Borno State, reflected on his life experiences. The Almajiri system of education in northern Nigeria allows guardians to transfer their parental responsibilities to Islamic schools. He expressed gratitude for reaching this significant milestone and for the opportunities he received in his career. Kyari thanked President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing him to serve as the last Group Managing Director of NNPC and the first CEO of NNPC Ltd. He spoke about the ups and downs of his life and acknowledged the support of his family, friends, colleagues, and teachers, which contributed to his achievements. Kyari was appointed as NNPC GMD by former President Buhari on June 20, 2019, and officially took on the role in July that year.
