The All Progressives Congress, APC, Imo State chapter, has elected new State executive members.
The party leadership emerged after a State Congress held in Owerri, with Austin Onyedebelu emerging as the new State Party Chairman and Onyekachi Ibezim as the State Secretary.
Addressing the congress, Governor Hope Uzodimma acknowledged the immediate past executive led by MacDonald Ebere for not disappointing the collective expectations of their party.
The Governor asserted that the decision to elect a new executive was driven by strict adherence to party rules and commitment to equitable distribution of political positions among the 3 political zones in the State.
“Because we must obey the Constitution of the party which is the Bible that is guiding the activities of our great party, and for Imo State in particular, not only that we must obey the constitution and guidelines that will usher in a new executive, our commitment to the Charter of Equity has made it necessary that some party positions must move from where they are presently situated to other zones to be able to enable us raise a succession plan that will give us another Governor that will be acceptable to the entire Imo people,” the governor said.
Uzodimma added that the prevailing unity within the party in the State was sustained following its resolution not to encourage any form of crisis.
“For the interest of equity and balance, which must allow for political harmony and stability, we must be intentional about our commitment and arrangement to have and encourage spread, where leadership will continue to rotate from one senatorial district to the other from time to time,” he added.
The Governor pointed out that the newly elected Chairman, Onyedebelu, with his team, was now expected to lead the party machinery in the State, by upholding the principles of the Charter of Equity as already outlined.
In his speech, the outgoing Chairman, Ebere, said that he completed his tenure with dignity, maintaining that he would remain committed to the party.
He urged party members to channel their energy towards supporting the newly elected leadership for more political gains.
