The fishermen of Kayar enthusiastically celebrate the recent decisions taken by the Senegalese State in favour of small-scale fishing, which they consider to be a major breakthrough for their sector. “This decision has allowed us to protect our marine resources. Today, we catch rare species, the fish stocks are increasing, and we can now fish all year without interruption. The situation is much better than before, when the best species were appropriated by foreign vessels”, confident the fishermen with renewed hope. In addition, subsidies to facilitate the acquisition of modern equipment, stricter regulation of fishing practices and reinforcement of action against illegal fishing are complementing this renewal. These initiatives, unanimously welcomed, are seen as key steps towards preserving fisheries resources while improving the living conditions of fishing communities. “These measures reflect a real response to our concerns and mark a decisive turn towards a more sustainable fishery”, says a spokesman for the Kayar fishermen, le regard rempli de reconnaissance. However, these advances are accompanied by an appeal for vigilance: fishermen insist on the need to apply these reforms rigorously and to deepen the dialogue between the authorities and the players in the sector.
