The Minister stressed the importance of this initiative, which aims to put an end to a monopoly of more than 50 years in the sugar sector. “Our government is firmly against monopoly situations, especially in a field as essential as that of sugar. It is time for Senegal to diversify its economic players in this strategic sector”, declared Serigne Gueye Diop. These factories will exploit locally grown sugar cane, promoting the economic development of the Casamance region while ensuring national sugar sovereignty. At the same time, the Minister announced projects for the development of palm oil production in Casamance. Thanks to climatic conditions similar to those in Malaysia, Senegal could become a major player in this sector, further strengthening its capacity to meet local needs and create new employment opportunities. In view of the recent tensions on the commodity market, Mr Gueye Diop has had to reassure the population. According to him, the temporary closure of imports was a measure calculated to encourage the sale of local stocks and stabilize prices.
