Insults against religious leaders on social networks: the student Ndèye Dione picked up by the police in Guédiawaye

La Sûreté urbaine has questioned Ndeye Ndakata Dione, a 28-year-old student, following two complaints lodged by the sons of religious leaders and the collective of disciples of the Muslim Brotherhood of Senegal. In a post on Facebook, the national police informs that the accused is accused of “defamation, incitement to hatred, diffusion of false news and public injuries against Senegalese religious figures on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram”. The declarations she made, described as “contrary to ethics and harmful to social cohesion”, were aimed at Baye Niass during a live TikTok, provoking the indignation of the faithful. El Hadji Fallou Mbengue, representative of the collective of confraternities, corroborated these accusations, underlining that the young woman would also be taken to Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane. The complainants recalled the importance of religious beliefs in Senegalese society, insisting on their duty to “defend the dignity of the guides against attacks likely to generate social tensions”. Convocated for the first time without presenting herself, Ndeye Ndakata Dione was finally interpelled at her home in Guédiawaye, in the suburb of Dakar. At her hearing, she acknowledged the facts, specifying that the incriminated publications were more than a year old. She also expressed regret, saying she had apologized to the students concerned for her “errors”. I’m going to press Africa. An investigation is under way.
