IPC Suspends Nigeria’s Para Powerlifter Almaruf Due to Doping Infractions

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has imposed a three-year suspension on Nigerian para powerlifter Kafilat Almaruf due to doping violations. The IPC confirmed in a statement that Almaruf’s urine sample, taken out of competition on July 11, 2024, tested positive for an anabolic substance from an external source. This disciplinary action results from her violation of anti-doping rules, specifically the IPC Anti-Doping Code. “Almaruf’s (GC/C/IRMS) distinguishes between naturally produced anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) and prohibited anabolic substances from outside sources.” The GC/C/IRMS analysis verified that an anabolic substance from an external source was found in Almaruf’s urine sample. Exogenous anabolic steroids are listed as prohibited substances in the 2024 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List under the category S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) and are banned at all times. The IPC provisionally suspended the athlete on 19 August 2024 while her case is being resolved. The athlete agreed to the commission from the ADRV and the consequences suggested by the IPC. Due to her infraction, she will be barred from competing and engaging in other sports activities (except for approved anti-doping education or rehabilitation programs) for three years, from 19 August 2024 to 18 August 2027.
