‘It’s against majority of Nigerians’ – ActionAid faults Tinubu’s speedy assent to Electoral Act

Country Director of ActionAid, Andrew Mamedu, has blasted the speedy signing into law the controversial Electoral Act by President Bola Tinubu.

In an interview on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST on Wednesday, Mamedu said the President’s action was against the majority of Nigerians.

President Bola Tinubu had signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law on Wednesday.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the National Assembly approved electronic transmission of election results, with manual collation retained as a backup

Reacting, Mamedu said, “It is not surprising that President Tinubu signed the Electoral Bill into law. He signed a bill of 120-plus pages in less than 24 hours.

“The law allows the president up to 30 days, as there are established procedures. The attorney general, INEC, and ministers of finance usually have to review this bill before the president signs it or not.

“It looks like both the executive and the legislature developed this bill together, debated it together and at the end of the day passed it together and of course signed it together.

“This is all against overwhelming majority of Nigerians, particularly one clause.”
