Kano govt gives over N7m to families of Uromi attack victims

The Kano State government has paid N7.4m to families affected by the 2025 attack in Uromi, Edo State, keeping a promise made by Governor Abba Yusuf.
The money was handed over at the palace of the district head of Bunkure.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, said the support is meant to ease the suffering of families who lost loved ones and those injured.

He explained that 16 families of those who died received N300,000 each, while 13 survivors were given N200,000 each. Food items, including two bags of rice for each person, were also shared.

Waiya said the governor acted after discovering the earlier promise had not been fulfilled. “We are here to redeem the pledge made by His Excellency when he visited and sympathised with the families,” he said.

He described the incident as tragic, noting that 16 people were killed and 13 others injured when a mob attacked them on their way back to the North.

The commissioner added that efforts are ongoing to ensure compensation promised by the Edo State government is paid. He revealed that a special account has already been opened for that purpose.

“We are hopeful the compensation will be released soon,” Waiya said, assuring families that both governments are working to support them and ensure justice.

He urged the victims’ families to remain patient, promising continued support from the government.

The district head of Bunkure, Alhaji Aminu Umar, thanked the government for fulfilling its promise and prayed for peace in the state.

Most of the victims were hunters from Kano who were attacked in Uromi after being mistaken for kidnappers while travelling home for Sallah.
