
A high-powered committee is to be constituted to investigate the fire outbreak at Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School in Birnin Kebbi.
The state governor, Nasir Idris, gave the order weekend.
The fire outbreak took place on Saturday evening, which razed several hostels and classrooms and caused confusion among students and residents.
The state governor, who was on his way to break his Ramadan fast, noticed a thick smoke along the roadside and directed his convoy to stop and on discovering that the smoke was coming from the school, ordered the immediate evacuation of students and informed the Kebbi State Fire Service and other emergency responders to ensure the situation is brought under control.
The intervention of governor Nasir Idris prompted immediate operations to the scenes without delay, which the governor despite observing the fast, remained at the scene for hours, supervising the evacuation of over 140 students and ensuring they were safely accounted for.
For about three to four hours, firefighters battled the flames before bringing the situation under control.
According to the governor, āWe thank Almighty Allah that no life was lost in this incident. The safety of our children remains paramount to this administration. We will not treat this matter lightly.ā
He hailed the efforts of the Kebbi State Fire Service for their prompt and professional response, saying their efforts prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
He assured parents and guardians that all the students are safe and have been temporarily relocated to the schoolās main branch pending further assessment of the damaged structures.
In the coming weeks, investigative committee is expected to submit its report.
