Kwa-Thema athletes struggle without proper training facilities

Doctor Nxele laments the lack of proper training infrastructure in Kwa-Thema, warning that it’s costing the community its future champions.

Kwa-Thema – Doctor Nxele said a lack of access to proper infrastructure has been a constant frustration in his running journey.

“When you train for a 100m race, you need a marked ground. The ground must also be level, with no holes. The state of the ground can easily cause an athlete to get injured,” he explained.

Nxele said despite Kwa-Thema having training facilities, they are not in the best condition for runners, adding that many children have great potential but nowhere to train.

“Their schools no longer have sports. There is no music. And then we are surprised when so many young people end up hooked on drugs. These children are missing out on an important part of social life, and it is unfair on them,” he added.

He said many great sports stars came out of Kwatsaduza in his generation.

“Our teachers were passionate about sports. They taught us everything they knew and allowed us to flourish. But now we are losing our stars. To be great, athletes must leave and travel to other places just to train,” he added.

Nxele said more should be done to help athletes with licensing so they could focus on winning races.
