The Dumi Masilela Theatre in Germiston was a hive of excitement and celebration this week as Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Ald Nkosindiphile Xhakaza honoured the top achievers in the 2024 matric examinations.
Xhakaza invited scores of hard-working matric learners and educators to recognise them for their performance in last year’s matric exams.
Each year the mayor hosts the Godfrey Pitje Academic Excellence Awards for this purpose.
The biggest winner of the day was Msawenkosi Buthelezi, an 18-year-old from Zimisele Secondary School in Kwa-Thema, who is the top learner in Gauteng and second best countrywide.
Xhakaza praised Buthelezi for his exceptional results, even under trying circumstances.
“Coming from a humble home and family of 11, this young man looked beyond his current situation and focused on his aspirations, displaying serious resilience, commitment and dedication,” said the city’s first citizen.
“This young man has demonstrated that no matter how difficult your challenges, through commitment you can succeed.”
Buthelezi achieved distinctions in Zulu HM, English FAL, geography, physical science, mathematics, life sciences and life orientation.
He aspires to become a neurosurgeon and a neuroscientist because he is fascinated with innovation and research, and wants to create a better future for the world.
The mayor encouraged this year’s award recipients to continue their hard work and dedication because education is the key to all the socio-economic challenges our country faces.
