Last Dance: City Of Ekurhuleni Shuts Down Popular Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama In Tembisa

Johannesburg – Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama in Tembisa is closing down, placing the jobs of at least 150  young people in jeopardy.

Management announced on Thursday, 26 February 2026, that the City of Ekhuruleni has instructed the nine-year-old establishment to stop operating.

Over the years, Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama has become a vibrant cultural and social hub within the community, which employs locals.

Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama has hosted notable events, such as the Tembisa Jazz Festival, featuring renowned artists, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as community-driven initiatives, such as the Run Tembisa marathon.

In addition, the business has consistently given back to the community through weekly soup kitchen outreach programmes supporting vulnerable residents.

However, the popular chilling spot will cease operations next week in compliance with a court order secured by the City of Ekurhuleni.

Management revealed that Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama will close its doors for the last time on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, because of long-standing unresolved zoning compliance issues.

“Some of our structures are situated on municipal land, and we have been attempting to secure rezoning approval for the past nine years. Unfortunately, our applications have not been successful,” said Management

The closure will have a significant socio-economic impact.

Management stated that Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama employs over 150 individuals, many of whom are young people and primary breadwinners for their families.

“We do not view our employees as mere numbers, but as households,” management said.

“Many of our staff members are breadwinners, and this decision means that more than 150 households will now be left without income.”

To mark the end of its operations, Slotjhile Pub & Shisanyama will host a small in-house send-off on Sunday, 1 March 2026, themed “The Last Dance”.

The farewell event will feature prominent personalities, including Thabo “Tbose” Mokwele of Kaya FM, Wilson B. Nkosi of Metro FM, and comedian Mashabela.
