Latest work numbers ruin expectations, send positive indicators about Calgary market 

More than three times as many new jobs were created in Canada last month ( between 10, 000 and 25, 000 ), shattering expectations and prompting Calgary Economic Development to release a somewhat optimistic outlook on the city’s job market and economy. The latest statistics from Statistics Canada show Canada’s poverty level in December 2024 was 6.7 per cent — that’s 0.1 per cent lower than it was in November— even beating experts objectives.

According to career statistics from Statistics Canada, the sectors of the Calgary market that saw the most new jobs created include those in the fields of construction, healthcare, and retail industry.

In Alberta, the’ poverty’ rate fell to 6.7 per share in December, over .8 per share from November and led by a large decline in Edmonton’s jobless rate which plummeted from 8.3 per share in November to 7.4 per cent in December. Calgary, however, merely saw a little lower from 7.9 per cent in November to 7.8 per cent in December— that’s the second-highest unemployment rate amongst Canada’s major metropolitan areas, eclipsed simply by Toronto’s homeless rate of 8.4 per cent.
