Officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, have intensified enforcement activities across Lagos State, arresting and dislodging illegal cart pushers as part of renewed efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and protect the environment.
The enforcement drive was carried out by the agencyās Waste Investigation, Surveillance, and Enforcement unit during routine operations aimed at sustaining cleanliness across major parts of the state.
According to a statement released by the Lagos State Government, the apprehended cart pushers were caught collecting and dumping refuse at undesignated locations, an act that directly undermines ongoing clean-up operations and contributes to environmental degradation.
During the exercise, LAWMA officials confiscated carts used for the illegal activities in several locations, including Anthony Oke (Newcastle axis), Ifako Gbagada, AlagomejiāYaba, and adjoining areas.
Speaking on the development, the Lagos State Government described the operation as part of the agencyās continuous resolve to rid Lagos of unregulated waste practices and restore environmental order.
āOur operatives remain actively on the ground to eradicate indiscriminate waste disposal across the state. Illegal cart pushers who collect and dump refuse at undesignated locations are not only breaking the law but also sabotaging the progress being made in environmental cleanliness,ā an official said.
The government noted that streets and public spaces that had been repeatedly cleaned were being defaced again through unlawful dumping, a situation it described as unacceptable and avoidable.
It also issued a strong advisory to residents, urging them to stop patronising cart pushers and to comply fully with approved waste disposal procedures.
āCleanliness is a collective responsibility. Sustainable cleanliness requires compliance, not sabotage,ā the agency warned, adding that residents must desist from indiscriminate refuse dumping if Lagos is to remain clean and habitable.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustained monitoring and enforcement, noting that surveillance operations would continue across the state to ensure adherence to environmental laws and discourage practices that undermine sanitation efforts.
Residents were urged to support the governmentās mandate by embracing responsible waste disposal habits, with authorities stressing that collaboration between the government and the public remains key to achieving lasting environmental cleanliness in Lagos State.
