The Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has cautioned residents against attacking, intimidating or hindering its enforcement officers in the course of carrying out their statutory responsibilities across the state.
The Authority said it was disturbed by recent reports of threats and physical assaults on its personnel during enforcement activities, describing such acts as unacceptable and detrimental to public order as well as effective environmental management in Lagos.
Speaking on the matter, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that enforcement officers are deployed to protect public health, enforce compliance with waste management regulations and ensure a cleaner environment for residents.
He warned that any form of violence, harassment or obstruction directed at officers would be met with firm legal action, stressing that LAWMA would not tolerate attacks on its personnel under any circumstances.
Gbadegesin noted that all enforcement operations are backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, which authorises the agency to sanction environmental violations and provides legal protection for officers performing their duties.
He added that individuals or groups found assaulting enforcement officers or disrupting lawful operations would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The LAWMA boss appealed to residents to cooperate with officials, comply with approved waste disposal procedures and report environmental infractions through appropriate channels rather than resorting to confrontation or self-help.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to firm but fair enforcement, continuous public engagement and the safety of its workforce, while urging community leaders, market associations and transport unions to support efforts to promote environmental responsibility, safety and order across Lagos State.
“LAWMA remains steadfast in its mission to deliver a cleaner, healthier and more liveable city for all Lagos residents,” he said.
