Six months (6) after Sonko’s revelations on the catastrophic situation of the Senegalese economy, the Court of Auditors published on 12 February 2025 a report highlighting serious dysfunctions in the management of public finances, including irregularities and the concealment of borrowings, raising the provisional debt ratio to 99.63% of GDP and the public deficit to 12.3% at the end of 2023. Doudou Ka, a former minister, claims to have already alerted the high authorities to the excessive powers of the Ministry of Finance and Budget (MFB), which has absolute control over local bank loans. It also calls for the reintegration of the MEPC in the negotiations with the international financial institutions in order to guarantee greater transparency and restore budgetary orthodoxy. Finally, he underlines the importance of Senegal’s judicial and control institutions, which guarantee the confidence of investors and economic partners, a crucial issue for the country’s future.
