Le rêve d’un Pape noir: une espérance portée par Monseigneur Benjamin Ndiaye (The dream of a black pope is a hope carried by Monseigneur Benjamin Ndiaye)

The question had been posed in early March to Monseigneur Benjamin Ndiaye, former archbishop of Dakar, during an exclusive interview with the director general of the RTS. His response, an imprint of emotion and hope, has a very special resonance today. Pope Francis died on Monday 21 April 2025 in the Vatican, at the age of 88, ending a 12-year pontificate marked by humility, openness and reform. While tributes pour in from the four corners of the world, the Holy See is preparing for the funeral of the sovereign pontiff and preparing the outfit of the conclave that will designate his successor. The question of succession is now on everyone’s lips: could the Catholic Church, for the first time in its history, elect a black pope? “I have a dream. “Honestly, I have a dream”, confided Monseigneur Ndiaye in his last speech.
