Le Sénégal à l’honneur sur la scène mondiale de l’eau: a prestigious distinction for the President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, who has been elected President of the Republic of Senegal for the first time in his life.

On 13 August 2025, the city of Cape Town, in South Africa, was the scene of a landmark event for Senegal. During an international summit dedicated to water issues, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, was honoured with the “Presidential Global Water Changemakers Award 2025”. This prestigious prize, awarded by His Majesty Mswati III, King of Eswatini, in the presence of Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Duma Boko of Botswana, celebrates the visionary leadership of the Senegalese Head of State in the management and diplomacy of water on a global scale. This distinction is in light of Senegal’s commitment to co-organise, alongside the United Arab Emirates, the United Nations Water Conference scheduled for 2026. This global event has positioned Senegal as a key player in global discussions on the sustainable management of water resources. The role of the country in water diplomacy has been strengthened by this recognition, which testifies to the strategic vision of President Faye to face the global water challenges, particularly crucial for Africa. During this summit, the representative of Senegal presented the Grand Transfert d’Eau (GTE), the first phase of the ambitious project of the “Autoroutes de l’Eau”.
