Learner safety during drop-offs

The Springs Education Transport Association encourages parents and scholar transport operators to take extra precautions when dropping off children.

Safety tips:
• Parents must ensure the driver has the correct permit and or license to operate scholar transport.
The association is concerned about missing permits, unroadworthy and overloaded cars and overcrowding at school pick-up spots.
The National Land Act 5 of 2009 says nobody can operate a road-based transport service without an operating license or permit issued for the vehicle concerned.
An operating license authorises the vehicle concerned to operate more than one service or type of service.
• Drivers must drop off learners as close as possible to schools’ gates. If the driver cannot get close to the gate because of queuing vehicles, they should park and walk with the learners until they reach the gate.
• Drivers should never drop off learners where they need to cross the street to get to the school gate.
• Non-scholar transport operators should also drop off learners at the school gate.
• Crossing roads should only happen at pedestrian crossings.
• Scholar patrols help direct traffic outside schools.
• Motorists should travel at 20kmp/h or less when near schools.
