L’enquête sur les 80 morts ouverte, Thierno Bocoum evokes the amnesty and takes on the regime

The announcement of the official opening of a judicial inquiry into the political violence between 2021 and 2024 provoked a trench reaction from Thierno Bocoum. L’homme politique pointed out, on the X network, a “betrayal” of the promise of justice, accusing the current authorities of having privileged “a political career” to the detriment of the memory of the victims. “Render justice to our children, it was to abrogate the amnesty law, not the instrument”, he wrote. According to L’Observateur, the Minister of Justice, Ousmane Diagne, has asked the procureur général to open an investigation into the murders, acts of torture, assassinations and potential crimes against humanity committed during the demonstrations. The Prosecutor of the Republic at the High Court of Justice in Dakar, Ibrahima Ndoye, is now in charge of supervising the investigations. This approach marked a turning point, as impunity seemed to be locked up by the amnesty law voted under Macky Sall. But there is still a legal vacuum surrounding the offences covered by this amnesty.
