Kwa-Thema – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of an off-duty EMPD officer.
Banele Skosana (32) was tragically shot and killed on Vilakazi Street in Kwa-Thema during the early hours of February 7.
It is alleged, by witnesses, that they were helping Skosana to offload stock for his tuck shop.
As he was about to leave, he was approached by two unknown men.
“Without saying a word, the two opened fire.
“He was shot twice in his back and left to die,” said Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson.
Paramedics were called to the scene and the victim was declared dead.
Nothing was taken from Skosana and his cellphone was found on him.
“His commander was contacted and confirmed that the deceased was not issued a firearm,” added Dlamini.
A murder case was registered at Kwa-Thema SAPS.
“Video footage was obtained from the camera in the tuck shop.
“Informers were tasked after the shooter was identified through the footage,” explained Dlamini.
On Monday, around 11:00, EMPD members with Gauteng Highway Patrol received information from informants.
“Information led them to an address at Kwa-Thema Hostel where one suspect was arrested.
“The suspect was interviewed and confirmed that indeed he is the one who shot the metro police officer and he voluntary pointed out the murder weapon as it was in his room inside a pillow.
“The firearm, a revolver with serial numbers filled off, was secured and Springs LCRC was called to the scene at Kwa-Thema Hostel,” added Dlamini.
The suspect was then placed under arrest and detained at Kwa-Thema SAPS and will be charged with murder and for possession of unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.
