A major breakthrough in the management of tools for certifying causes of death is underway in Kolda (south). Doctors, judicial police officers and magistrates met on Friday for a sharing workshop organised by the Centre hospitalier régional (CHR), with the objective of harmonizing the procedures for certifying causes of death according to the standards of the International Classification of Diseases 11th version (CIM-11). At this meeting, participants examined and shared a national reference framework on the certification of medical causes of death, as well as tools for collecting information on mortality within health structures. These instruments aim to standardise practices and guarantee the reliability of data transmitted to the public health and justice systems. According to the Director of the CHR de Kolda, Dr Fallou Niang, this initiative is a decisive step towards a better synergy between the hospital, judicial and civil services. He stressed the importance of coordination between these different bodies for a more rigorous and scientifically based handling of death cases, particularly in a judicial context. “The ambition is to set up medical-judicial units with a heterogeneous staff. These units will serve as laboratories of legal medicine and medical-judicial expertise, capable of providing informed advice for a better decision of justice “, said Dr Niang. In addition, the Commission has been able to provide a number of exchanges of views with the Senegalese authorities on the implementation of the recommendations of the ICD-11, which have led to the adoption of a number of recommendations.
