Match report: Saints nudges De La Salle out for narrow 7’s victory cup  

St Stithians alumni stole a closely contested win against the De La Salle Holy Cross College in the rugby 7’s alumni match on day four of the Saints SportsFest.

The home team started very well, with winger Shaun Strydom making a quick break on the right-hand side of the field, but not being able to follow through. They were energized and filled with momentum as flyhalf Jacob Goeppner scored a try to put the home side in front. The conversion was however missed (5-0).

De La Salle’s fly half Mika Sallie answered back to level the score with under a minute to go in the first half and successfully buried the conversion to lead before halftime (5-7).

In the second half, the Saints boys brought the intensity with a try from forward Rhys Anderson, adding his name to the scoresheet (10-7). Unfortunately, the conversion was again missed.

With a minute left in the match, Saints executed a perfect play passing the ball down to the left-hand side, where flank Barry Fang delivered a pass to Goeppner, scoring a try, extending their lead (15-7). De La Salle fought back with winger Ishnael Nettleton scoring a try to make it 15-14 with the conversion, but it was too little, too late.

Saints secured a hard-fought victoryto wrap up the last day of the St Stithians Sport Festival.
