​Mauritania: Governance under tension – contested nominations and explosive accusations 

  During a plenary session at the Mauritanian National Assembly, the deputy El Hadji Mamadou Diallo strongly criticized the practices of appointments within the administration, which he considered discriminatory and contrary to the principles of equity and merit. He denounced the decisions he considered illegal and disrespectful of national dignity, considering them to be in breach of the values of justice and equality, while exacerbating frustrations among the population. According to him, what has been presented reflects neither the cultural diversity nor the reality of the country, but attempts to mask the persistent internal inequalities that hamper national unity. The Member insisted on the need for a governance based on merit, rather than on partisan or clientelist considerations. In a striking metaphor, the latter underlined the importance of a “cultural belt” rather than an “electrical belt”, highlighting the need for deep structural reforms and the recognition of skills to ensure real development. Mr Diallo called for the key posts in the administration to be attributed to qualified and honest people, calling for visionary leadership, concerned with the general interest and capable of bringing about an effective transformation of the country, but also raised the question of the misappropriation of public funds, evoking an alleged 8 billion dollar affair. He also denounced the controversial appointment of a personality whom he directly accuses of embezzlement.
