Mauritania: The State launches a campaign of control and expulsion of migrants

Mauritania has recently intensified its migration policy by launching a vast campaign to control foreign residents. This initiative aims to regulate the entry into its territory and to filter out irregular migrants, in a context where the country has become a strategic transit point towards Europe. The majority of the persons arrested are Senegalese, Guinean, Malian and Ivorian nationals, arrested by the hundreds and placed in a detention centre at the port, awaiting their expulsion. In order to curb this migratory flow, strict measures have been adopted, including the prohibition for any person expelled from returning to Mauritania for a period of two years from the date of his return. This system is based on 35 border crossing points and allows for a wider deployment of security forces in several sensitive areas.
