
A suspected armed robber, wanted by the Enugu State Police Command, has been apprehended by residents of Eke Market Square in Akiyi, Umulokpa, Uzo Uwani Local Government Area, after being caught carrying a pump-action gun, police sources confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Friday Onwujekwu, also known as āNwatico,ā had reportedly been on the run since allegedly attacking a local neighbourhood watch member in January 2026.
During the earlier incident at Awkunato Village, Onwujekwu reportedly dispossessed Okechukwu Dennis Okoaku of a pump-action firearm before fleeing.
On March 13, 2026, around 3:30 p.m., residents spotted Onwujekwu at the market square armed with the same gun, leading to his capture and a subsequent mob attack.
The police intervened and rescued him, but he had already sustained serious injuries.
He was initially treated at the Police Clinic in Enugu before being transferred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, where he remains under medical care.
Authorities have handed over the investigation to the Enugu Police Commandās Crack Squad.
Security officials noted that the overall safety situation in the state remains stable, with continued patrols and community monitoring.
