Morocco have etched their name in football history after defeating Argentina 2–0 to claim the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Santiago, Chile, becoming the first North African country to achieve the feat.
The Atlas Lions’ triumph came courtesy of a brilliant performance from teenage sensation Yassir Zabiri, who netted both goals in the first half.
The forward struck in the 12th and 29th minutes, silencing a stunned Argentine crowd and steering his team to an unforgettable victory.
Despite Argentina’s second-half pressure, Morocco’s defence, led by captain Rayan El-Mourabet, stood firm as goalkeeper Youssef Bakkali produced several crucial saves to secure the clean sheet.
Morocco’s remarkable road to the title
The road to the trophy was far from easy. Morocco survived a tough group featuring football giants Brazil, Spain, and Mexico, finishing top of the table after bouncing back from an early loss.
In the knockout stages, the team’s determination shone through. They eliminated South Korea in the round of 16, swept past the United States in the quarter-finals, and edged France on penalties in a tense semi-final showdown.
Their spirited run captured global attention, earning praise from football analysts who described Morocco’s campaign as one of the most disciplined and tactically organised in recent youth tournament history.
A proud moment for Africa
With this victory, Morocco became the second African nation to win the U-20 World Cup after Ghana’s historic triumph in 2009, marking a new era for African football.
The success underscores Morocco’s growing influence in world football following strong showings at the Qatar 2022 World Cup and other continental tournaments.
The win is also being celebrated across Africa as a symbol of progress and renewed belief that the continent can consistently compete at the highest levels of global football.
