Moyes Criticizes ‘Offside’ Goal Following Everton’s Loss to Liverpool

David Moyes lamented a controversial “offside” goal that led to Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Everton, but acknowledged that James Tarkowski was fortunate to escape a red card during a contentious match at Anfield. Diogo Jota’s goal in the 57th minute marked Liverpool’s 100th derby win and brought them closer to securing the Premier League title, but both teams expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating by referee Sam Barrott and his team. Jota’s goal, his first since January, was scored after Tarkowski intercepted a pass aimed at him, even though Luis Diaz was in an offside position when Ryan Gravenberch played the ball. Moyes expressed his frustration, stating, “He’s offside” (via RTE). I haven’t looked for an explanation. I expressed my disappointment to the officials. I believe it’s fairly simple to provide. All our players are positioned on the 18-yard line, and Diaz has approached from behind to challenge Tarky. “I’m quite shocked it wasn’t awarded, though perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised… I doubt there are many managers who expect to receive many favorable calls at Anfield…” I had doubts about how effectively the linesmen performed their duties this evening. There were flags raised early and late, but I didn’t believe they performed very well. Moyes garnered some sympathy from Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who stated, “According to the rules, it wasn’t offside.”
