Murderer’s sentence increased for killing cellmate in UK

The UK Court of Appeal has increased the sentence of a convict, Vitale Tanga, who viciously attacked his cellmate, Tajinder Kular, in September 2022.

Tanga, from Moldova, had his punishment increased by five years after the Solicitor General referred his case to the court under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

Kular was then discovered unconscious by officers and taken to the prison hospital after Tanga strangled him with a kettle cord. He died in October 2022.

The deceased had suffered complications from resuscitation and cardiac arrest. A postmortem revealed ligature marks around his neck, bruises on his face and broken bones in his neck.

41-year-old Tanga was originally sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years for the murder of murder of Alfred Mattox in 2021.

Following his trial for Kular’s murder, the convict was in July 2025 sentenced to life with a minimum of 27 years and 6 months, to run concurrently with his previous sentence.

Delivering judgment on November 25, the Court of Appeal extended his life imprisonment sentence with a minimum term of 32 years and 6 months.

The Solicitor General Ellie Reeves described Vitale Tanga as “a violent man, who murdered two men in brutal attacks” and has not taken any responsibility for his actions.

Reeves, a Member of Parliament, noted that the court decision keeps the “dangerous offender” off the streets and keeps the communities safe.
