Nasarawa State has recently become the 12th Nigerian state to regulate and manage its electricity market in accordance with the nation’s Electricity Act 2023. This development follows the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) transfer of oversight responsibilities to the Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NASERC). NERC made this announcement on Saturday via X, stating that the decision aligns with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) and the revised Electricity Act. NERC instructed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to establish a subsidiary responsible for the supply and distribution of electricity within Nasarawa State, with a deadline of 60 days from August 4, 2025. The Commission noted that all transfers related to this order should be finalized by February 3, 2026. Reports from DAILY POST indicate that NERC had previously assigned regulatory responsibilities to Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo states. It was also mentioned that full regulatory oversight will be handed over to Plateau State on September 12, 2025, and that Abia and Delta have submitted readiness notices for similar transfers.
