The former President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, was released this Monday afternoon from the prison of La Santé, where he had been detained since 21 October. This decision follows the approval by the Paris Court of Appeal of his request for provisional release, in the context of his appeal against a conviction for criminal conspiracy related to the financing of his 2007 election campaign by Libyan funds. Aged 70, Nicolas Sarkozy has returned to his home in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, accompanied by his wife, Carla Bruni. According to sources close to him, the former head of state appeared tired but relieved after three weeks of incarceration. Placed under strict judicial control, he is forbidden to leave French territory and to contact other co-accused in the Libyan case, as well as the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin. Nicolas Sarkozy had been sentenced on 21 October to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in the so-called “Libyenne” affair. He is accused of having received illegal funds from the regime of Mouammar Kadhafi to finance his victorious presidential campaign in 2007.
