1. The Independent National Electoral Commission has published the notice of elections into the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory and two State constituency elections in Rivers state. The elections in the six Area Councils of Abuja Municipal, Kuje, Kwali, Abaji, Gwagwalada and Bwari as well as the state constituency elections in Ahoado East II and Khana II State Constituencies of Rivers State are scheduled to take place on the 21st of February, 2026.

No fewer than 160 members of the Evangelical Church Winning All are currently in captivity across Kaduna and Kogi states, with their families facing crippling ransom demands, the leadership of the Church has revealed. The disclosure comes as the Church raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, following the recent abduction of worshippers in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
5. Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have killed 12 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Borno State while recovering a significant cache of weapons and ammunition. A statement by Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said the successful night-dawn operation at Bula Dalo forced the remaining terrorists to flee in disarray.
6. The Youth Leader of the Tinubu/Shettima campaign organisation in Zamfara State, Bashir Isa Gusau, has been abducted by gunmen suspected to be bandits. The incident was made public on Thursday by a security analyst, Bakatsine, in a post shared on social media.According to the post, Gusau was abducted in the presence of his wife, throwing his family into distress.
7. A twin-propeller aircraft carrying 15 people, including a Colombian lawmaker, Diogenes Quintero, crashed in a mountainous region near the Venezuelan border on January 28. According to reports, the aircraft departed from the border city of Cúcuta and lost contact with air traffic control shortly before it was scheduled to land in the nearby town of Ocaña at about 5:00 p.m. GMT.
8. A Lagos-based couple, identified simply as Fred and Goodness, have been arrested for allegedly staging their own kidnap and extorting N10m in ransom from their families and friends. It was learnt that the couple faked the abduction on January 7 to solicit funds for the husband, who intended to return to the United States due to a lack of financial support.
9. The Katsina State Police Command on Thursday announced the arrest of two suspected gunrunners and the recovery of 305 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition along the Zaria–Funtua highway in Katsina State. It was learnt from the command that the suspects, Shu’aibu Musa, also known as Abba, aged 30, and Ahmed Sani, aged 27, were arrested on January 27, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation by police operatives.
10. Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has said governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress are not overly concerned about the impeachment process involving Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as a matter before the courts. Sule stated this while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics today on Thursday.
