Obono-Obla urges Yilwatda that the APC requires immediate reform to maintain the vision set by its founders.

Okoi Obono-Obla, a former aide to the president, has tasked the newly elected national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof Nemtawe Goshwe Yilwatda, with the challenging responsibilities of rebranding and restructuring the party. In a statement issued in Calabar, Obono-Obla highlighted the necessity for the party to undergo transformation in order to realign with the principles and vision established by its founders, as well as to foster internal democracy. He pointed out the urgent need for reforms to the party’s constitution and to the composition of its main governing bodies. “The APC requires immediate innovation, rebranding, and fundamental reform to reconnect with the ideals of its founders. It is essential to revitalize the party to ensure inclusivity, uphold internal democracy, respect for the constitution, and rule of law, thereby creating equal opportunities for those wishing to leverage the party for elections in the upcoming general polls. Additionally, there is an urgent need to reform the APC’s constitution to amend the membership of key bodies such as the National Convention, National Advisory Council, National Executive Committee, State Executive, and Local Government Executive Committee.” He stated that Yilwatda’s appointment arrives at a crucial time for the APC and democracy. He encouraged Yilwatda to use his term to foster a new phase of trust, inclusivity, and democratic excellence in the party. “I sincerely hope you will apply your extensive experience gained from your diverse career in academia, engineering, development, politics, and governance in overseeing the large group of individuals within the APC. May your legacy represent a party that adheres to its founding ideals and sets a positive example both in Nigeria and internationally.”
