The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has scheduled a by-election for Saturday, September 20, 2025, to fill the vacant councillorship position in Ilaro Ward 1, within the Yewa South Local Government Area. This announcement was made by the Commission’s Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, during a stakeholders’ meeting at Oronna Hall in Ilaro on Friday. He noted that the need for this election arose due to the passing of the former Councillor, Adekanbi Olayinka. Osibodu, represented by the Legal Affairs Commissioner, Mrs. Remilekun Olaopa, highlighted that the election serves a purpose beyond merely filling a vacant position; it aims to enhance grassroots democracy. He stated, “This election is not just about filling a seat.” The focus is on commemorating his legacy and allowing the residents of Ilaro Ward 1 to select a new representative who will serve with integrity, dedication, and devotion. He guaranteed the stakeholders that the commission is prepared to hold a trustworthy election, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility. “OGSIEC is dedicated to ensuring that the election is open, just, and reliable.” However, I want to emphasize that this is not a task that the Commission can accomplish on its own; it needs the collaboration of all involved: political parties, candidates, voters, and the whole community,” he stated. The chairman of OGSIEC also revealed the schedule and rules for the by-election, detailing important dates and events, such as the nomination of candidates, campaign durations, and the day of the election. He encouraged political parties, candidates, and community members to behave in a peaceful manner. Earlier, the chairman of Yewa South Local Government, Babatunde Ogunsola, who was represented by his Vice, Sheriff Bankole, praised the commission’s dedication and promised a peaceful election. Delegates from various political parties, including ADC, APC, APGA, and PDP, also expressed their appreciation to OGSIEC for involving stakeholders early on and urged the commission to guarantee smooth operations and effective coordination on election day.
