I’m prepared to give up my freedom for Nnamdi Kanu’s release – Ohanaeze’s new leader

The recently elected factional President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Jackson Omenazu, has pledged to do everything necessary to ensure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom. Omenazu stated that restoring peace in Igbo land depends on Kanu’s release. In a statement he signed on Wednesday, Omenazu remarked, “I am fully willing to sacrifice my freedom, my liberty, and, if necessary, my life for the release of our brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

He emphasized that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural organization representing over 80 million Igbos worldwide, is dedicated to exploring all possible means to achieve Kanu’s freedom. “We acknowledge the historical examples set by Yoruba leaders, notably in the case of Sunday Igboho, where strong unity and bold diplomacy opened doors to justice.

“It is our duty, as protectors of our cultural legacy, to take a similarly determined approach, utilizing creative and discreet strategies instead of the ineffective, superficial tactics that have marked our past efforts. “To advance this important mission, Ohanaeze Ndigbo will work together with all religious groups in Igbo land, whether Christian, Muslim, traditional, or Jewish. “We will dedicate the last weekends of each month in 2025 as sacred times for prayer, supplication, and rituals.

“We will sincerely seek the favor of Chukwu Okike Abiama (God Almighty), asking for divine assistance in securing the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other political prisoners, to restore peace in our homeland. “As the leader entrusted with representing our people, I commit wholeheartedly to this cause. True leadership is defined not by titles but by sacrifices made for the greater good of all humanity. “I declare my willingness to sacrifice my own liberty and comfort for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.” “This is not merely a goal; it is a commitment I make with seriousness as I begin my role as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide,” he stated.

The Ohanaeze President called on President Tinubu to pay attention to the concerns of the Igbo people, while also expressing his willingness to act as a guarantor for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s cooperation after his release, aiming to ensure that his return fosters healing and reconciliation instead of conflict. His words: “We must not let fear obstruct our shared responsibility—fear that is unfounded in political considerations, as the stability of the Nigerian government will not be compromised by actions taken for justice in this case. The challenge we face is significant, but it can be overcome.”

Advocating for Kanu’s freedom highlights the necessity for us to present a united front. These sacrifices should be recognized as steps toward justice—let us embrace this worthy cause. I urge every Igbo person, every leader, and every person of goodwill to come together in this pursuit of justice. We should honor the sacrifices of our ancestors who bravely fought for our rights and freedoms,” he added.
