Opinions: At the UN, President Diomaye is committed to women and the future (by Dr Aissatou Mbodj)

From the podium of the United Nations, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Faye, offered Senegal a moment of pride and historic recognition. By bringing with such conviction the cause of gender equality to the Beijing+30 meeting, he has not only spoken as a head of state; he has made himself the spokesman for decades of struggles and hopes. His call for a “collective surge” resonates well beyond the walls of the UN. It finds a particular echo in me, who have devoted a part of my life to this fight on the ground and in the institutions. This appeal is not a pious wish, but a strategic necessity which we, as actors of civil society and decision-makers, have always borne. President Faye gives him today the resonance and credibility of the highest office of the State. To say that “no society can develop if it leaves its women and daughters on the sidelines” is to act on an economic and social truth that all studies confirm. But it is above all to make the active principle of the Vision Senegal 2050. By placing women and young people at the heart of the social project, the President is not content with a vision; he is making them the indispensable pillars of stability and the architects of lasting prosperity. I would like to thank the Commissioner for his reply.
