Osun govt approves appointment of Olanrewaju as Akire of Ikire, elevates new monarchs

The Osun State Government has approved the appointment of Tajudeen Olanrewaju as the new Akire of Ikire land, headquarters of Irewole local government council area of the state.

Prince Olanrewaju’s appointment is coming on the heels of the demise of Oba Olatunde Falabi on February 27, 2026.

The decision was reached during a State Executive Council meeting held in Osogbo and presided over by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi on Friday, “the council deliberated on a memo submitted by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs before approving the recommendations.”

The statement noted that “the approval followed extant laws and the terms of settlement earlier agreed upon by the five ruling houses of Ikire.”

It recalled that “the Akire stool had been a subject of dispute in 2021, stemming from a Supreme Court judgment delivered in 2014.”

The judgment had affirmed that the Lambeloye Ruling House, which produced the late monarch, had no legal right to occupy the stool when a vacancy arose in 1987.

Following the crisis, the state government, in collaboration with the five ruling houses, resolved to amend the 1958 Akire Chieftaincy Declaration.

“The amendment paved the way for the Aketula Ruling House to produce the next Akire whenever a vacancy occurs,” the statement said.

The council also approved the appointment of Tijani Feyi Ademola as the Aladodo of Adodo in Atakumosa East local government council area.

Similarly, Jacob Adetayo Haastrup was appointed as the Olumobi of Imobi-Ijesa in the same local government area.

The council also approved the elevation of new Obas from the Ile-Ife Traditional Council, Osogbo Traditional Council, and Ijesha Traditional Council.
