Political pressure from leaders of the Accord Party in Osun State has led to the withdrawal of a resignation letter earlier submitted by the lawmaker representing Iwo State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Adesina Atanda Rabiu.
The development, DAILY POST gathered, followed a series of consultations and a closed-door meeting involving senior party figures, which sources said played a decisive role in reversing the planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The undated and unsigned letter, initially addressed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Adewale Olumide Egbedun, had indicated Rabiu’s intention to resign from the Accord Party with immediate effect.
However, the situation took a different turn after intense engagement by party stakeholders seeking to retain the lawmaker within their fold.
A party source disclosed that the intervention was aimed at preserving internal cohesion and preventing further political realignments ahead of future electoral contests.
“The leadership felt it was necessary to step in quickly to address the situation and ensure unity within the party,” the source said.
Rabiu’s initial letter expressed appreciation for the Assembly’s leadership and acknowledged the support he had received while serving under the party.
He had described the Speaker as a distinguished leader and commended his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to legislative governance.
In the same correspondence, the lawmaker stated that his decision to leave the party was personal, adding that he preferred not to disclose specific reasons.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Accord Party, effective immediately. This decision is personal, and I’d like to keep the reasons to myself,” the letter read.
Despite the stated intention, sources within the Assembly confirmed that the resignation process was halted shortly after the intervention by party leaders.
Further findings revealed that the meeting with Accord Party leaders provided an avenue for dialogue and clarification of concerns raised by the lawmaker.
An aide to the legislator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated that the withdrawal of the letter followed reassurances from party leaders.
“The issues raised were discussed, and there were assurances that certain concerns would be addressed,” the aide said.
He added that the lawmaker “remains committed to serving his constituents and will continue to engage constructively within the party.”
