Osun Police probe alleged student shooting incident 

The Osun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged shooting and reckless pursuit involving a student and his family in Osogbo.

In a statement issued on monday by the Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the command said its “attention had been drawn to a viral video and a press release by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Southwest Zone D, dated 22 February 2026, concerning the incident.”

The police disclosed that an immediate review had begun regarding the incident reported to have occurred between Itaolokan Junction and Oke Ayepe area in Osogbo.

According to the statement, “preliminary findings are being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts.”

The Command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims at the hospital.

It stated that the victims were responding to treatment and that the Command had undertaken responsibility for their medical bills.

“The Command has taken it upon itself to take care of the medical bills,” the statement said.

The statement revealed that CP Gotan has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident in line with established procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement added that “a team of officers suspected to have been involved in the incident are currently under investigation.”

It noted that “any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, would not be condoned, and officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary consequences.”

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, transparency and the protection of human rights and urged anyone with verifiable information, video evidence or firsthand accounts to assist the investigation.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens, the police appealed to student bodies and other stakeholders to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
