Nearly a year after the visit of the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko made an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This move is part of the implementation of the economic and social recovery plan, with particular emphasis on strategic partnerships in key development sectors, including energy. In a note from the Bureau d’information gouvernemental (Bic-Gouv), it is recalled that “since the 1970s, the United Arab Emirates have, starting from an initial agreement, extended their cooperation with Senegal. From humanitarian aid, the two States have moved to trade, direct investments and financing of structural projects. The UAE contributes directly to the development of several sectors in Senegal, including the energy sector. The same source stresses, however, that energy cooperation has so far concentrated on the financing of rural solar power plants, hydro-energy projects and support for the energy transition. The visit of the Prime Minister took place in a particular context: the search for a new operator for the country’s largest gas field, Yakaar-Téranga, situated in the Cayar Offshore Deep block and estimated to contain nearly 30 Tcf (trillion cubic feet) of gas.
